Freeman 42 vs 43 vs 47 — Which One Should You Buy?

These three hulls cover most of the serious Freeman market on the Gulf Coast, and buyers call us weekly asking which one fits their program. The honest answer depends on how far offshore you run, how many people you fish, and what you want your fuel bill to look like at the end of a tuna season.
Freeman 42 — the volume seller
The 42 (and the 42 LR long-range variant) is the boat most Gulf Coast owners land on. It is big enough to run to the floaters out of Orange Beach in comfort, small enough that one person can handle it at the dock, and it carries the deepest used market of the three — which matters when you go to sell. Most we see are triple 300s or quad 400s. Triples are the efficiency play; quads are the "leave at 4 a.m. and be back for dinner" play.
Freeman 43 — more boat, similar footprint
The 43 gives you additional beam and interior volume without a dramatic jump in slip requirements. Owners who overnight, run heavy tournament crews, or want more mezzanine and cockpit real estate tend to prefer it. It rides bigger seas with less effort than a 42, but you will pay for it in fuel and in a thinner resale pool on the Gulf Coast.
Freeman 47 — the long-range tournament boat
The 47 is a different animal: quad 450Rs, real range, and enough deck to fish a full crew hard for two days. If your season is built around swordfish, yellowfin, and long runs, it is the right tool. If most of your trips are day trips inside 60 miles, you are buying capability you will not use — and paying to keep it.

What actually moves the price
On used Freemans, engine hours and warranty status drive value more than model year. After that: electronics package, whether the boat has been ceramic coated and kept under cover, service records, and how the boat is rigged for the fishery it will be used in. A well-documented 42 with mid-life engines often sells faster than a newer boat with no records.
