Buying a Used Freeman Boat in Alabama
By TMD Marine Brokerage · Orange Beach, AL
Freeman catamarans hold their value better than almost anything in the offshore world — a clean used 37, 42, or 47 will sell fast and trade close to its original sticker. If you're shopping for one on the Alabama Gulf Coast, here's what we look at on every survey.
Hull and tunnel inspection
Freemans run hard. Check the sponson noses, tunnel ceiling, and transom corners for stress cracking or repair work. Original gelcoat tells a story — a Freeman that's been repainted has usually had something underneath it addressed.
Motors and hours
Twin or quad Yamaha 300s and 350s are the standard. On the Gulf Coast, expect 80–150 hours per year on a fished boat. Under 1,000 hours is healthy; 1,500+ with full service records is still fine, but it should be priced accordingly. Always pull ECU reports.
Electronics and rigging
Most Freemans are rigged with Garmin or Simrad triple displays, Seakeeper, and a full Rhodan or Minn Kota trolling setup. A 5-year-old electronics package is functional but a refresh adds real resale value.
What a used Freeman should cost
Pricing moves with motor hours, electronics, and Seakeeper. The Alabama market runs strong — boats here sell at or above national comps because of the offshore access out of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. We can walk you through current comps on any model.
