Buying a Used Cape Horn in Alabama

By TMD Marine Brokerage · Orange Beach, AL

Cape Horn has been the workhorse offshore center console of the Gulf Coast for two decades. They run dry, fish hard, and hold value better than most of the competition. Here's what we check on every used Cape Horn that comes through TMD Marine.

Hull and stringer integrity

Cape Horns are heavy, hand-laid hulls. Tap the stringers and transom — listen for any dull spots that signal moisture intrusion. The 31, 32, 36, and 39 models all share the same build quality, but anything pre-2010 deserves a closer look at the transom around the motor bolts.

Motors

Twin or triple Yamaha or Mercury Verado power is standard. Yamaha 300s and 350s are the most common — under 1,200 hours with clean service records is healthy. Pull the ECU on every engine; reported hours and actual hours don't always match.

Electronics, rigging, and creature comforts

Look for matching twin Garmin or Simrad units, current chartplotter cards, working radar, and a clean wiring loom behind the helm. Hardtops, outriggers, livewell pumps, and reel saver plugs should all be functional — replacement costs add up fast.
